Checklist

The following steps have been developed to assist students in the Thesis/Project process.

  1. The student should attend the COEHP Honors Sophomore Success Meeting in the spring semester of their sophomore year.  Any COEHP Honors students seeking more information are welcome to attend. Next meeting: Spring 2025
  2. The student should identify a faculty member whose area of expertise/research is of interest to the honors student.
  3. The student should meet with the potential faculty member and discuss their willingness to become his/her honors faculty mentor.
  4. The student should take (departmental/major/program prefix390H1 during the junior year under the direction of the faculty mentor. During this time, formulation of the Thesis/Project idea is developed and explored.
    • Preparation of the Thesis/Project proposal, completion of the Thesis/Project Proposal Form, and selection of your committee are typical outcomes of this course.
    • One copy of the Thesis/Project proposal form should be submitted electronically to the COEHP Honors Program Associate Director or uploaded here. The deadline is Reading Day the semester before graduating.
  5. Composition of the Honors Thesis/Project Committee includes the following:
    • Faculty Mentor*
    • One faculty committee member
    • Additional committee members may be added at the mentor's discretion
  6. Enroll in (departmental/major/program prefix) 498HV (can be taken more than once if enrollment is < 3 hrs; 3 hrs maximum = required enrollment) and complete the Thesis/Project.
  7. The completed thesis/project is submitted to the Thesis/Project Committee at least two weeks prior to the defense date. The Honors student should schedule a committee meeting for approval of the Thesis/Project that aligns with the Honors College and COEHP defense deadline.
  8. The thesis/project defense can be completed in any of the three following formats. Your faculty mentor can help you decide which type of defense will work best for you and will have the final say in this decision.
    • Traditional academic defense
    • Conference presentation
    • Presentation at COEHP Honors Symposium in April
  9. The Thesis/Project Evaluation Tool may be optionally utilized by the thesis/project mentor to evaluate the thesis/project and defense. This form DOES NOT need to be submitted to the COEHP Honors Program.
  10. The Thesis/Project Approval Form should be turned in to the COEHP Honors Program Associate Director no later than Reading Day of the student's graduating semester. You can upload the completed form here.
